Hashtags – A Basic Understanding

Hashtags – A Basic Understanding

Hashtags - A Basic Understanding, what are hastags, how do I use hashtags,Beth Bailey's Avon Blog ~ LipstickShoesAndMore.net

Are you using hashtags to expand your reach on social media? If not, you might should start!

Hashtag? What the heck is a hashtag? You’ve seen it before… maybe as what most of us think of as a pound sign, the symbol that comes in front a number, the symbol we all use to use (many still do, including me! lol) instead of the word number, or literally as what comes behind a number to tell you how many pounds something weighs! That’s right… this “#”. If you’re not using hashtags in your social media posts yet, or if you are new, here’s a little bit about them I hope helps you! This is by NO MEANS advanced expert advice – just information for a basic understanding of what they are and how to get started with them!

Hashtags are searchable topics on social media. They are a word or group of words with no spaces in-between them, no special characters, no punctuation, and the # symbol in front of it. Using relevant and authentic #Hashtags strategically will bring people to you and your brand who may not already be following you or even be aware of you yet.

Hashtags actually started on Twitter but then expanded to Facebook, Google+, even more so on Instagram, and now LinkedIn and Pinterest are coming on board. When someone searches a topic, they can see any post you’ve used that hashtag in. Since they’re usually listed with the newest at the top, if yours is a highly competitive hashtag (which is not necessarily a bad thing), it can sometimes be hard to spot.

Hashtag subjects can be broad such as #Shopping, #Business, #SelfEmployed, or #Entrepreneur, or they may be more on-point like #FacebookBusinessTips, #AvonRep, #BloggerMom, or #HowToHashtag. You can also create your own that represent your very own brand or even a cause that you may want to raise funds or awareness for. When creating a post you’re using hashtags in, I’ve found it’s usually best to use a combination of broad and specific so that you can reach audiences that are new to you and your brand as well as those who already specifically looking for the kinds of products and/or services you have to offer. And remember, every.single.post you put out could be someone’s first impression of you.

The only platforms I use and my personal experience with hashtags has been…

  • On Facebook, I’ve seen I can use up to about 5 hashtags before the algorithm starts dropping me. I keep reading “reports” that say Facebook penalizes hashtags but my experience has not reflected that. For example, I may have a post with zero hashtags that reach very few or a good bit and the same is said for some of mine that have 5 or 6 hashtags. I’ve come to think it’s not necessarily the number of hashtags I have in it, but maybe a combination in the number of people looking for the content and people looking for the hashtag. Hashtags here must exactly match the search terms people are looking for. If you use them on your personal profile, your post audience setting determines who on Facebook can see it (Friends means only your Friends ca find them and Public means everyone can). In a Closed Group, only those belonging to the Group can search and find them, while anyone can see them in a Public Group. Since all posts on a business Page are public, all of your hashtagged posts there can be found.

  • On Google+, I usually just stick with the same ones I post on Facebook, although there isn’t really a limit to the number of hashtags you can use. Hashtags here don’t have to exactly match how people are searching and their ranking is based on how popular the hashtag is instead of how recent it is. Also, search results will also show topics *related* to your hashtag. With Google+ hashtags, do try to stick with telling Google what your post is about (ex: #BusinessTips) rather than a location you are at, as those don’t seem to work as well.

  • On Instagram, you can use up to 30 hashtags in the post and per comment! Instagram can greatly expand your network because of that. If you use your maximum number of hashtags on Instagram, it’s better to either do them at the bottom of the post with a lot of space between your content and the hashtags or for an even cleaner post look, to put them in the comments.

  • On LinkedIn, hashtags only really became “clickable” this year and are catching the kind of attraction here that they have on other platforms. It’s still not clear how many hashtags to use in a LinkedIn post, so I’ll be sticking with 1-3.

  • Until VERY recently, Pinterest (which is actually not a social media platform but a search engine) has totally discouraged users from using hashtags unless it was one that was brand-specific. Now, Pinterest seems to finally be gearing up for hashtags! They are beginning to not only have clickable hashtags in Pin descriptions but also pulling up a list of other similar hashtags while you are keying in your hashtag. It is still unclear exactly how we will see them on this platform or how many are recommended, so I’d say for now, start with about 3-5 hashtags. Their algorithm penalizes any Pin it considers spammy, hence a Pin with keyword-stuff hashtags will be down on the totem pole, so to speak so don’t go crazy.

With hashtags and these platforms, experiment for yourself and you’ll start seeing how useful they are! I hope that I’ve at least given you a basic understanding of what hashtags are and how to start using them.

The 3 Different Types of Silver Jewelry

I’ll explain the differences in Avon’s silver jewelry!

Silver Jewelry Types

Avon has 3 different types of silver jewelry: Silvertone, Sterling Silver, and Stainless Steel. (Did you know that? Many don’t.)¬†Let’s go over¬†what each type is and even the best care for it.

Elegantly Radiant CZ Cocktail Ring Layered in Leaves Earrings

Silvertone

Silvertone is silver-plated over zinc, brass, or steel. It’s actually¬†jewelry castings that are plated in¬†100% genuine silver. Avon’s silvertone jewelry is nickel-free and hypoallergenic. Nickel testing is done by Avon, resulting in pieces that give you minimal risk of skin allergies. There are also quality test performed during and after manufacturing to ensure excellent quality and safety. As with 100% silver pieces, moisture is the #1 cause of tarnish, so do keep your silvertone pieces away from water, soaps, perfumes, and makeup. Use¬†jewelry cleaner to keep these pieces looking shiny and new. (Pictured above are Elegantly Radiant CZ Cocktail Ring and Layered in Leaves Earrings.)

Sterling silver ring with a 3/4 carat princess cut simulated ruby in the center surrounded by CZs. Sterling Silver I Love You To The Moon And Back Necklace

Sterling Silver

Sterling Silver is one of the most popular silver alloys. All of our sterling silver items are stamped with a 925 purity mark, identifying it as genuine sterling silver. Avon has an in-house designer who creates Avon-exclusive sterling silver pieces. Avon eliminates the markups of having a middle-man with our Sterling Silver jewelry by doing the materials sourcing itself. All stones are individually hand-set. Each piece is hand-polished for a smooth & flawless finish. We believe in making sure our customers receive their sterling silver pieces untarnished! Each piece has an anti-tarnish coating, wrapped in an anti-scratch paper, and is then placed in a specially-developed anti-tarnish pouch. Sterling Silver tarnishes naturally with exposure to moisture so periodic care may is needed. Polish with a cloth or tarnish remover. (Pictured above are: Sterling Silver Simuilated Ruby Ring and Sterling Silver I Love You To The Moon And Back Necklace.)

Pure Elegance Watch Created with Swarovski¬ģ Crystals¬†Men's Stainless Steel Classic Figaro Chain Necklace

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel has become a popular metal for both¬†men’s & women’s jewelry. It’s durable, engraveable, and¬†has a matte sheen. It’s also hypoallergenic.¬† Stainless Steel is wonderfully scratch-resistant, tarnish-resistant, doesn’t fade or become dull even with everyday wear. It’s nearly indestructible¬†and is super easy to care for! You can just use warm water with a mild dish soap and then dry it with a lint-free cloth. (Pictured above: Pure Elegance Watch Created with Swarovski¬ģ Crystals (stainless steel with silver plating) and Men’s Stainless Steel Classic Figaro Chain Necklace.)

3 Things to Do for Your Face

If you don’t do anything else¬†for your face, do these 3 things!

avon-skin-care-cleansers

A proper skincare routine doesn’t have to be extensive to keep your skin healthy and vibrant. Many of us have such a busy life, we think we just don’t have the time to make our facial skin a priority. If you don’t do anything else for your face, do these! Btw, Avon has a great free skin consult. Click here to start your consult.

Cleanse

Use a cleanser to wash your face every night, to remove dirt and oil accumulated during the day, as well as makeup Рno matter what your skin type is.

– If your skin is oily or combination, also wash your face with a¬†cleanser in the morning,¬†to remove oil and bacteria accumulated during the night. Anew Clean Purifying Gel Cleanser is perfectly formulated for oily/combination skin. I have a mostly oily complexion myself. I’ve used Intensive Moisture Foot Cream ever since I first¬†discovered it when I became an¬†Avon Rep almost 5 years ago and love it. I’m waiting to get low on it and maybe try our¬†Clean gel cleanser I already mentioned.

– If your skin type is dry, a morning swipe with a warm-wet washcloth should be sufficient and is still important to do even though a cleanser isn’t involved. Give this¬†Comforting Cream & Mask¬†a try.

РIf you have both dry and acne-prone skin, this is considered to also be combination skin but make sure your cleanser is formulated to address acne-prone skin such as Avon ClearSkin Blemish Clearing Foaming Cleanser.

– If you have normal skin, that doesn’t mean you are necessarily exempt from cleansing in the morning!¬†That will depend on how sensitive your skin is. Find a balanced formula cleanser.¬†The cleanser for dry skin above is also formulated for normal skin. Maybe it’s what you’re looking for.

Using warm water is better than hot or cold to wash with because hot water is abrasive, will irritate skin, and will make dry skin drier while warm water will allow the cleanser to lather well. If you have oily skin, no, hot water is still not better.

Avon has great cleansers for all skin types and concerns. Click here to check out our cleansers.

Just a note about using any brand of Micellar water as a cleanser, which Avon does indeed offer, as well. It is my firm belief that while Micellar water is great as a toner, a freshen-up, and maybe the occasional last-resort cleaner if nothing else is on hand, it does not do the job as a daily facial cleanser to fully get rid of dirt, oil, and makeup.

A tip¬†for your facial skin’s health:¬†don’t go to bed with makeup still on. Your face needs a break to renew itself.¬†Bedtime with a¬†clean face¬†(even with moisturizer/treatment lotion)¬†is the perfect time for that.¬†Sleeping with makeup still on your face will cause the collagen to break down, thus resulting in early-aging. One night of sleeping with makeup on likely won’t cause problems unless you’re prone to break-outs.¬†The makeup will clog your pores and then bacteria sticks to your face,¬†either of which causes acne. I don’t¬†know if this happens to everyone but my pores open wide when I’m asleep. I don’t need more help having acne by not washing my face!

By the way, eye makeup should be removed daily, too. Otherwise, it’ll end up being rubbed off onto your pillow and may then be rubbed into your eyes, causing irritation.¬†Avon Moisture Effective Eye Makeup Remover Lotion is also pretty popular.

Moisturize

Moisturizing actually is important to do, as well. Our skin wants to be hydrated and protected so either we do it with a lotion or day cream or¬†the skin¬†will¬†produce it on it’s own.¬†If the skin has to do it on it’s own,¬†oil will likely be overproduced. Applying the right moisturizer for your skin type¬†once to twice a day¬†won’t¬†make¬†your face¬†oilier. It will actually help calm down your skin’s impulse to produce it’s own.

If your skin is oily, a moisturizer for normal skin will of course just make it worse, so going with an oil-free formula will help keep it in check while adding moister to your skin without also adding oil. If your skin is dry, you want a rich formula that will add a little bit of oil to your skin. Yep, if you have normal skin, you can still benefit from moisturizing, too!

When choosing a day lotion or day cream, it should have SPF to protect your skin against the sun’s rays which it is exposed to every time we go outside in the daytime,¬†even on light cloudy days and¬†in winter. Yes, of course Avon has¬†moisturizers, too! Our day lotions and day creams have SPF 15 to SPF 50. Click here to find them!

Scrub

Every face needs a good but gentle scrub every few days, at least once a week. If you have a dry complexion, a scrub may need to be done a few times a week. No matter what your skin type is, be gentle about it! Scrubbing too hard can cause your skin to develop tiny tears in the skin.

If you have acne-prone skin, I understand the thinking that¬†scrubbing harder will better penetrate your pores – but it won’t! It¬†will only make it worse by creating tiny tears around the pores and causing the acne to become more irritated (as if you want that, right?). Here’s a good scrub that also doubles as a cleanser. ClearSkin Professional Deep Pore Cleansing Scrub.

My personal favorite (that I start to freak out if I run low on without having a new one ready) is our ClearSkin Pore Penetrating Invigorating Scrub. It’s a fine-grain scrub¬†formulated with¬†Pore Firming Technology and also with Eucalyptus Extract¬†and Witch Hazel to cleanse and refresh. I love the mint scent!

If you like this post or at least found it helpful,¬†I’d love to hear from you and please share away!
